Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on the 18th of July 1994, grew up in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was born to a mother of both black and white parents. She grew up on her mom's side. Russell said that her skin color was a reason she felt rejected by her peers as a child. [3] Her parents struggled financially and were constantly in a state of flux, moving their lives sixteen different times to pursue her father's job. Russell spoke out about how despite the difficulties, Russell said that she had always been creatively inclined as a child. She wanted to become a dancer, and later to become an artist. At the age of 18, she began her first acting class. She saved her money from work to buy a car and drove to Los Angeles to audition. She would go back to work when her cash was exhausted and would then begin performing. The routine continued for four more years until she was offered her first television role.
